Since its founding 20 years ago Fortress Investment Group has been a force of innovation. The former private equity firm prefers to set trends rather than follow them. It solidified its spot as a leader in its field more than a decade ago when it became the first large-scale private equity firm to go public on the New York Stock Exchange. At the time a move like that was unheard of in the industry.
That innovative decision led to rapid growth for Fortress. The private equity firm is now a global investment management firm worth billions of dollars with numerous assets and investors. Today, the New York based company employs close to 1,000 people.
Fortress specializes in capital markets. It has vast experience with managing mergers and acquisitions. Because of the connections its made with various companies over the years it has a great deal of institutional knowledge concerning a wide variety of industries. In its line of business Fortress has discovered it pays to be versatile.
Much of Fortress’ success can be attributed to its leadership team. In particular it three founders, Randal Nardone, Wes Edens, and Rob Kauffman.
Fortress’ first investments were in real estate. With more than capable leaders leading the way Fortress was very profitable right out of the gate. Its private equity funds grew almost 50 percent in under 10 years. In 2002 Fortress hired two new additions to its leadership team, Michael Novogratz and peter Briger.
Last year Fortress was purchased by Softbank, a Japanese multinational conglomerate holding company. This acquisition made Fortress the first alternative-investment firm to be bought. The firm was sold for more than $3 billion.
